The laser's active medium (1) is tube shaped, so that annular radiation modes (10) of lower order and divergence can be easily generated in relatively short, simple optical resonators. The radiation modes are particularly useful for material machining, medical applications and measurements. At the same time pumping heat can be evacuated by solid, liquid or gaseous coolants outside (3) and inside (4) the resonator, so that the mean radiation power is greatly increased for the same volume of active material. Also costs per unit power are greatly reduced.
