Fresh concrete in a hopper (6) is transferred to a flexible pipe (3b) via a chamber (4). The latter has an inlet valve (9), an outlet valve (12) and an inlet (14) for compressed air via a valve (15). With inlet valve (9) open a pusher is advanced to displace concrete into chamber (4). Valve (12) is opened when the chamber is full and the pusher continues to displace concrete into the chamber and out through the outlet valve. The inlet valve is then closed and air from valve (15) empties the chamber through the outlet valve.
