A called subscriber dialed number is stored in a corresponding connecting circuit. When a subscriber is dialled, to which a connection cannot be built up (e.g. subscriber engaged or line is blocked), the connection is diverted by building a connection to another subscriber or to an individually allocated switching device. This is done using a corresponding dialling signal collected from a diversion store. A switching criterion indicating impossibility of reaching the original dialled subscriber maintains the originally dialled subscriber number stored, and when the diverted call is established, the stored number is transmitted to the new subscriber or switching device.
