A surface layer of adjustable thickness comprising water and floating oil and/or solids enters a boat through grills in the bows, and a lower fraction of this water is directed by a pump to a pair of nozzles (59) in the stern. The nozzles are rotatable to direct jets of water through various outlets (60-62) to steer the boat and propel it forwards. The boat may be remote controlled from an adjacent ship into which a second pump directs oil skimmed from the layer inside the boat by a float- supported tray (92). Between the inlet grills and the tray (92), filtering cages (43) remove solids above a given size. Pumps are driven by electricity supplied from the ship. <IMAGE> |
