PURPOSE:To obtain vinylphenols with high selectivity, by dehydrogenating ethylphenols in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a chromium (III) oxide alone or its combination with a specific metallic oxide. CONSTITUTION:Ethylphenols are dehydrogenated by using a catalyst consisting of chromium (III) oxide or its combination with one or more types of metal oxides selected from zinc, manganese, titanium, and zirconium oxides in the presence of a diluent at 400-700 deg.C and a liquid space velocity (LHSV) of 0.1-10 hr<-1> under ordinary pressures to give vinylphenols. Preferably, the ratio of the number of Cr atoms to that of metals is 0.1-10:1, and the molar ratio of water to ethylplenols is 2-200:1. EFFECT:Improved catalyst properties, e.g. long catalyst life, increased mechanical strength, etc. |
