In the process of the principal patent, the interior wall of a glass tube is covered by at least one glass layer of higher refractive index than that of the tube, thus forming the core of the optical fibre. In the present process, the inner wall of a glass tube (11) of silicon dioxide is coated with a layer (10) of a dopant of germanium dioxide or germanium-dioxide-containing material which is converted on heating into a glass layer of higher refractive index than that of the tube, and a mixed composition of dopant and silicon dioxide, where the coating material is deposited by a reaction in which hydrogen and compounds thereof are excluded.
