A metal oxide which possesses surface OH groups is heated with H2 or N2 to 350-550 degrees C then impregnated with a soln. of TiF4. The impregnated oxide is cold rolled for 0.5-4 hours, steam dried at 100 degrees C then dried at 200-600 degrees C in an inert atmos. to give a catalyst. Catalysts are used for oligomerising 3-6C olefins to 6-8C olefins useful in high octane petrol or in preparing plasticisers, In an example, gamma-alumina was added to a H2TiF6 soln., cold rolled, steam dried then dried at 300 degrees C in N2. It was used to convert propene to a mixture of hexenes. |
