A tool is used for carrying out mechanical operations on pipes where a pipe to be machined is tensioned in a stationary frame (10). In this frame is a circular tool carrier (40) which can turn relative to the frame. The internal diameter of the tool carrier is greater than the largest outside diameter of the pipes to be machined. Different machining devices can be fixed to the frame. Tensioning jaws (24, 26) which can be released from the frame (10) grip the pipes to be machined from the outside. The tool carrier is ball-supported in the frame and the frame and tool carrier are in the form of outer-or inner ring of a radial ball bearing. Further, the tool carrier has an outer toothing which is connected with a drive pinion (48).
