1323386 Radial arm machine tools E K WITZIG and R FRANK 1 Sept 1971 [5 Sept 1970] 40694/71 Headings B3B and B3C A radial arm machine tool comprises a vertical support including a hollow support column 8, an extension arm 5 adapted to carry a machining head 6, and a connection assembly 4 interconnecting the extension arm to the column, said connection assembly comprising a bearing pin 11 extending inwardly of the column, and bearing means located inside the hollow of the support column and movably journalling the bearing pin within the column. The pin is fixed to housing 4 and is mounted in column 8 by radial bearings 12, 13 and a thrust bearing 14. A conical ring 20 fixed to the column has a conical surface 19 suitable for engagement with conical surface 16 on the pin. A piston 21 engages against the inner race of bearing 12 and cooperates with cylinder 22 which is fed by hydraulic line 24. Extension arm 5 is locked relative to the column 8 by hydraulic pressure causing piston 21 to raise the pin into locking engagement with ring 20 by frictional engagement between the two conical surfaces. This also ensures accurate alignment between the pin and the column. When the arm 5 is to be radially adjusted the hydraulic pressure is released so that the weight in the connection assembly, the arm and the machining head is taken by the bearings.
