<p>Prepn. of cyclopropanecarboxylate esters of formula (I) (where R1-5 are H or opt. substd. hydrocarbyl) comprises reacting an aldehyde of formula R5CHO (II) with a cyanide salt (III) and a 2-halocyclobutanone of formula (IV): (where Hal is halogen) The process gives good yields (e.g. up to 91%) and 3 avoids separate prepn. of the cyclopropanecarboxylic acid and the corresp. acid halide. In an example, alpha-cyano-3-phenoxybenzyl 2,2,3,3,-tetramethylcyclopropane-carboxylate is prepd. from 3-phenoxybenzaldehyde, KCN and 2-chloro-3,3,4,4-tetramethylcyclobutanone.</p> |
