In the prodn. of glycosides of the dammarene type, triterpene alcohols of the dammarene type are isolated from the leaves of plants and converted into glycosides by linking with sugar residues. Pref. triterpene alcohols are cpds. isolated from birch leaves, esp. trihydroxy-dammarene (C30H52O3) and/or tetrahydroxydammarene (C30H52O4). the glycosides (which correspond to saponins obtd. from ginseng root) have inhibitory, stimulant, sedative, analgesic and muscle relaxant activity. The glycoside ginsenoside has effects on behaviour and learning. The activity of the glycosides is attributed to enhanced metabolism due to effects on cell membrane permeability. The glycoside prods. are related to cpds. isolated from ginseng root. Their prodn. from alcohols obtainable from plant leaves (esp. birch leaves) alleviates supply difficulties due to the scarcity of ginseng root.
|
