The controller comprises a codec unit connected to the subscriber station via low-pass filters. The digital input of the codec is fed from the output of a receiver buffer register. The buffer is connected to a two-wire multiplex line. Likewise a buffer is connected on the send side of the digital signal output of the codec. The buffers are connected to and controlled by a hold circuit. This circuit has an associated counter which can be set to the number of digits corresponding to pulses in the pulse-frame used on the multiplex line, i.e. 32 digits. The counter is connected to comparators which, in turn, are connected to associated address registers.
