The worm wheel (4) in worm gear mechanisms has to be adjustable in the axial direction in order to achieve the desired tooth bearing at the tooth gearing, size and position of the tooth bearing being dependent on the torque and the direction of rotation. For this purpose, synchronising plates (7, 8) are provided in the housing (1). In order that the worm wheel need only be mounted once and the amount of time taken for the axial adjustment be reduced, the synchronising plates (7, 8) are installed between the outer races of the rolling-contact bearings (5, 6) and the supporting surfaces between the diameters in the bores of housing (1) and cover (2). These synchronising plates (7, 8) may be temporarily changed in external diameter in order to be able to mount them from outside through annular spaces between the worm-wheel shaft (3) and the housing or cover bore.

|
