The system regulates the unwinding of a material strip from a roll under a set tension, having a drive or brake for the roll with a speed control and a superimposed tension control. The parameters for the speed control are continuously determined by a computer from the tension data. The latter can be used to optimise the effective control amplification, and can include roll width, specific gravity of the material and momentary roll radius.
