The floating caisson fits below and close to the bottom of a ship's hull, engaging with the sides so as to give a dry working space, and is partic. for welding floating hull sections together. It has a base formed by one or more rigid members, with sidewalls at each end, one or both of them movable so as to form a seal against the hull side. Packings are included to seal the caisson to the hull, together with ballast tanks to regulate the buoyancy. Between at least one sidewall(3) and the adjacent end of the base(1) is a flexible intermediate component(4), pressed against the curve of the hull(8) to form a seal against the latter. The packings(5) are continuous, and extend along each side of the base, the intermediate component and the sidewall.
|
