4,4,4-Trichloro-1,2-epoxybutane prepn - by dehydrohalogenation of 2-halo-4,4,4-trichlorobutanol in the presence of antioxidant

In the prepn. of 4, 4, 4-trichloro-1, 2-epoxybutane (I) by reacting 2, 4, 4,4-tetrachlorobutanol (III) or 2-bromo-4, 4, 4-trichlorobutanol with an aq. soln. of alkali(ne earth) metal hydroxide as basic dehydrohalogenating agent (II). The reaction is carried out in the presence of an emulsion-inhibiting amt. of an antioxidant (IV) selected from alkali metal bisulphite, catechol and 4-alkyl catechol in which the alkyl gp. contains 1-8C. (I) is useful in flame retardant materials it may be used as a plasticiser for polymeric materials (I) may be reacted with e.g. polyhydroxy materials to provide chlorinated polyether polyols which are useful in preparing flame retardant polyurethane foam. The process reduces or eliminates emulsion formation enabling recovery of (I) immediately after the dehydrohalogenation.
