When the control computer 81 of an escalator or other passenger-carrying conveyor malfunctions, a second computer 82 maintains the control signal at its value immediately before the malfunction. A warning may be given to prevent further use of the escalator and to allow the escalator to be stopped manually, eg. when it is empty. Sudden deceleration of a loaded escalator, which may be dangerous, is prevented thereby. Automatic recovery after the malfunction is possible. <IMAGE>
