Filter elements in a filter press are closed and made tight by the automatic adaptation and control of their closing force in correspondence to their opening force. The opening force, of variable magnitude, is generated by the pressure of the fluids introduced into the cavities of the filter elements. Signals corresponding to the pressures of all fluids (e.g., suspensions, washing fluids, air under pressure) introduced into the cavities of the filter elements, continuously measured by manometers (1, 2, 3, 4), are compared with a signal corresponding to the closing force to produce a reference signal, available at any time, which permits adjustment of the closing force. The reference signal is used by controlling apparatus which carries out the adaptation and adjustment of the closing force.
