Electrostatic precipitator comprises a pair of parallel collecting plate electrodes connected to a first terminal of a potential source with an auxiliary plate electrodes disposed therebetween adn connected to a second terminal of the source. A wire electrode extends parallel to the front edge of the auxiliary electrode and arranged so that the ratio of the distance (a) from the collecting electrodes to the distance (b) to the auxiliary electrode is 1:0.8 to 1:1. The precipitator avoids the use f two positive potentials with associated complex power supply.
