The fibre material, for example waste paper, is introduced into a rotating drum (1) which has a perforated shell (4) provided on the inside with longitudinal fins (7), but no tearing or cutting tools whatsoever. Through a feed line (8), fluid is passed into the drum (1) so that the fibre material is wetted and remains in a wet state. When the drum (1) rotates, the fibre material is periodically lifted by means of each of the longitudinal fins and then dropped back from the upper part of the drum (1) onto the drum bottom. As a result, the material is defibrated and divided into a fine fraction and coarse fraction. The fine fraction passes through the perforation, and the coarse fraction is discharged through an orifice in one end wall of the drum (1). Any foreign bodies present in the fibre material can readily be separated out in this way.

|
