<p>Chaloogenides (I) of particle diameter 0.1 micron with crystals of 50 angstroms X 100 angstroms or less are of formula MXy where M is Ru, Rh, Ir or Os; X is S, Se Te and their mixtures; and if is 1-3, or M is Te, Re or Mn and if is 1.5-4. (I) are prepared by mixing at 0-400 degrees C, in the absence of an aq. solvent: (a) Metal salts where the anion may be halide, acetate, (perfluoro)carboxylate, (hexafluoro) acetlacetonate, sulphate or nitrate, and where the carbonated part of the anion is a C1-C8 (fluoro) hydrocarbon and (b) Li2X, Na2X, K2X, KHX, NaHX, (NH4)2 X, (RNH3)2X, (R1R2NH2)2X, LiHX, or (RR'R4NH)2X where R1R' and R4 are 1-20C alkyl or 6-20C aryl, identical or different. (I) are very good catalysts, capable of working in a sulphur environment e.g. in hydrodesulphanation, hydrodenitration, hydrotransfounation and hydrogenation. (I) are prepared easily using the method of the invention, as very finely divided, almost amorphous powders.</p> |
