<p>A continuous annealing plant for sheet, esp. soft steel sheet for drawing, includes a furnace for averageing or the pptn. of carbon; the sheet or strip travels horizontally along a reduced number of very long paths which limits the number of guide rollers used to reverse strip direction, so very few rollers, or possibly no rollers, are required. When furnace uses the guide rollers, the latter should have the max. possible dia., and the pref. plant has (a) a heating zone raising the steel to above its recrystallisation temp.; (b) a temp. soaking zone; (c) a quenching zone using an aq. bath above 75 degrees C. (d) furnace (1); (e) final cooling zone. Horizontal furnaces may also be used for stages (a, b). The use of very long paths and the min. number of guide rollers reversing strip direction, where the max. possible dia. is used for the guide rollers, reduces strain ageing which can occur due to the passage of the strip round the rollers.</p> |
