The paper transport unit for e.g., typwriter, is designed to enable a paper sheet to be quietly inserted or ejected without having to turn e.g. the end knob of a typewriter platen. The is achieved by having a small electric motor powering the platen through an intermediary reduction gear. The gearing is fixed to the platen framework and is selectively coupled to the motor rotor pinion by an adjustable carrier which is, in turn, coupled to an adjustable handle on the platen frame. The handle interacts with a switch to close the motor's current circuit when the pinion has engaged with the reduction gear.
