Coal is liquefied to produce petroleum-like liq. prods. by (a) mixing particulate coal, a non-donor solvent (I), and a quinone cpd. to form a slurry, (b) contacting the slurry with molecular hydrogen in a liquefaction zone at elevated temps. and press., (c) sepg. the liq. prod. effluent into fractions, including (I), and (d) recycling (I), without hydrogenation to step (a). Specifically, (I) is a solvent contg. 0.8% donatable H2, and has a boiling range of 350-850 (esp. 400-700) degrees F. Effective hydrogenation may be carried out, even in the absence of hydrogen-donor solvent. The process thus requires no external solvent hydrogenation unit. |
