[Also in Divisions C1 and C5] A molecular sieve having pore size equal to or less than that of a 5A type sieve is exchanged with complex Pt group metal ions, dried and reduced and the exchanged sieve is further exchanged with Pt group metal ions. Followed by drying and reducing again or finally exchanged with alkali or alkaline earth metal ions. Specifled sieves are 3A or 4A types and specified exchange ions are Pt, Pd, Na and H+. In a single exchange about 3.5% by wt. of a Pt group metal may be incorporated and after a second exchange the metal loading is increased to about 5% 'by wt. The exchanging, drying and reducing cycle may be repeated a number of times. The exchange is preferably performed by contacting a moistened sieve with an aqueous solution of complexed P.t group metal ion (e.g. amines such as NH 3 ) drying in air to 550‹C and then reducing with H 2 gas at elevated temperature.
