In order to guarantee non-slip transport of the mail (8) even when the transfer unit (4) is accelerating, it is proposed that the means for adjusting is a belt rocker (32) that can pivot about an axis of rotation, the pivoting motion causing one of the belts (12, 14) to pivot and thus causing the distance thereof to the other belt (12, 14) to vary.
