Sewing machine cutter having a knife blade movable towards a fixed blade has the movable blade displaced towards the fixed blade by a toggle linkage whose end positions are fixed and the movement of the blade away from the fixed blade past a predetermined position is inhibited. Used for cutting threads or tapes in sewing machines. Engagement of knife blades is reduced to min. to prevent tape accumulation at knife blades.
