The passage wall and the surface of the shaft adjacent the bearing each have a plurality of axially spaced circumferential grooves defining lands therebetween; the sides of the grooves of at least one set are parallel and oblique to the surface so that when the retainer is urged radially inwardly against the shaft as by tightening of bolts 60, 61, the lands of one set positioned in corresponding grooves of the other set are elastically deflected axially to provide the desired preloading. |
