To avoid gaps on the storage tape of the telephone call answering machine, the storage tape is rewound (F15) following the playback of a second part of the call answering text of the announcement tape (F11) after the recording of an incoming message (F10) on the storage tape but before the restoration of the standby condition (F1). The messages recorded on this storage tape are simultaneously monitored. Once the last recorded message has been identified, the magnetic recording medium is disabled and the standby condition (F1) restored by rewinding the announcement tape (F4). A virtually gap-free recording of incoming messages on the storage tape is thus achieved. <IMAGE>
