The tool applies a removable protective coating of plastics sheet to the steering wheels of motor vehicles or other items liable to get dirty. It comprises a hollow cylinder (5), onto which a strip of adhesive sheet is wound in a roll (6). The cylinder turns freely on a handle (2) rotating on roller bearings (1, 3, 4). The handle can be situated to one side of the bearing, in the axial direction of the roll, and all can be disposable and permanently secured together. The roller bearing nearest the handle can be slightly tapered, the roll being clamped between the bearings.
