Programme controlled dish or laundry washing machine provided with a water supply which is independent of the mains pressure is provided with a storage tank which contains a part volume of the water needed for a part of the washing or rinsing cycle of the machine, this tank being followed by a smaller tank. Latter tank is provided at its inlet with a syphon tube of a large cross-sectional area and at its outlet with a syphon tube of a small cross-sectional area with the latter terminating in the drum. Smaller tank which is an overflow tank is provided with a pressure switch which is effective to open a valve in the supply line of the storage tank for a period necessary to fill the storage tank with a water quantity needed for a programme cycle. Programme control circuit holds the valve shut until the start of a following cycle.
