The piston (3) for a rapid action press has a piston rod (20) which extends to one side. A guide (9) is mounted centrally on the cylinder cover (8) on the opposite side of the piston rod which extends axially into the piston and the piston rod. This guide has a stop (16) to limit the piston travel. The stop can be adjusted from the outside with a chain wheel (24) and nut (23). The piston further has a space for the idle stroke which can be connected to a pressure source via bores which pass through the cylinder cover.
