The proximity switching device comprises a transmitter operating with light and receiver which can operate distance-selectively. The transmitter (2) radiating light and the receiver (2) responding to light are mounted pivotably in a chassis (1). Transmitter and receiver (2) are each mounted in a housing (23) so as to be displaceable relative to a lens (26) arranged therein. The direction of the optical axes and the distance of transmitter and receiver (2) from the respective lens (26) can be changed in coordination with one another, force-controlled by means of a pivoting device (3, 4). This device can be used for distance-selective sorting, fine positioning and accurate controlling. It can thus be used for positioning and stock keeping as light barrier or as intrusion protection since it can be adjusted to a desired sensing distance in a simple manner and is insensitive to stray light. <IMAGE>
