A transistor ignition system is for an i.c. engine where the switch-off speed of the power transistor is considerably increased. The ignition voltage can be increased and the shift in the ignition timing can be reduced as a function of the motor speed. The power transistor (1) is connected in the primary circuit of the ignition coil (2). The secondary of the coil is connected to the sparking plug (5) in the conventional manner. The base of the transistor is connected to a control and regulating circuit (3) formed by the ignition timing transmitter and a control device. The power transistor is driven in the active region. The base current of the transistor is held in a range to prevent the transistor from saturating.
