A self-baking electrobe system has a number of sintering tubes located around a central supply tube. The electrodes (3) are formed by sintering material in a number of tubes (2) located on a pitch circle diameter. Hydraulic or pneumatic pressure is applied to pistons (8) to sinter material admitted through supply pipes (17). Heating elements (11) are located around the tubes. Supply material is passed through a central tube (14) which is fed by a suitable gas (16).
