The automatic closure of the toe of a sock on a circular knitting machine is effected using apparatus which turns the sock inside out to double-knit the toe. The loosely knit toe extremity is bound with a tightly tensioned yarn wound around the knitted tube. The tensioned yarn is knitted in to close the toe, and the two parts of the toe are joined together. A heat-shrinkable yarn is introduced to finish off the garment and render it ladderproof on steaming. Normally, where a draw-thread is used to close the toe of a sock, the sock is entirely knitted on the reverse side, which produces an unsightly finish on the toe. The device of the invention provides a method of knitting the ribbed welt, the leg, the heel and the foot, before turning the sock to knit the toe. Any finishing off stitching is thus turned to the inside after the sock is turned right side out, on completion.
|
