1486814 Heating and cooling railway vehicles ALEX FRIEDMANN KG 5 Dec 1974 [6 Dec 1973] 52598/74 Heading F4V In a railway vehicle, heating and cooling apparatus comprises an air heating and cooling unit (not shown), ducts 1, 2 leading therefrom to the passenger compartments of the vehicle and supplied respectively with heated or cooled air and with heated air, and within each compartment, a baffle 4 within duct 1 defining a passage 5 which communicates with an outlet shaft 6 via openings (6<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 3) in duct 1, a pivoted flap 11 at the inlet to passage 5, and an air outlet 7 in duct 2 controlled by a shutter 8 which is actuable by an electromagnet 10 in response to a thermostat in the compartment, the shutter 8 and flap 11 being linked by a lever mechanism 13 whereby the total quantity of air delivered to the compartment is maintained substantially constant regardless of the positions of the shutter 8 and flap 11. During a compartment cooling mode of operation and upon a temporary demand for heating, the shutter 8 is opened and the flap 11 simultaneously moved to a position in which air flow through passage 5 is substantially reduced. The temperature of air delivered to the duct 1 is controlled by a thermostat responsive to the temperature of air outside the vehicle. The flap 11 is supported by a bearing 14 having a flange 16 secured to the outside of the duct 1. |
