Cardenolide glucuronic acids of formula (I) and their physiologically acceptable salts are new: (where R is H or OH; and n is 0, 1, 2 or 3). (I) are digitoxigenin and digoxigenin derivs. which have positive-inotropic cardiac activity of the same order of that of Digoxin and Digoxin. (I) have a similar good receptor affinity and are suitable for treatment of cardiac insufficiency. (I) have a greater rate of elimination than Digitoxin so that dangers of accumulation and the associated toxic side-effects are reduced. (I) can also be used in radioimmunology to determine the influence of cardenolide glucoronides on cardenolide concns. in the blood.
