The volume compensation is in a fluid line, especially in the fuel line of a fuel injection system downstream of a feed pump. The compensation device (55) has a compensation chamber (57) which is connected with the fluid line (23). The chamber is bounded by an elastic, flexible wall (58) which does not effect pressure increase in the fluid. The flexible wall is a membrane (58), stetched in the contact plane of two housing sections (59, 60) which form the compensation device. The end positions of the membrane are determined by the inner walls of the housing sections (59, 60).
