Di:chloromaleic anhydride prepn. - from chlorobutadiene in presence of iodine

Dichloromaleic anhydride (DA) is prepd. by oxidising hexachlorobutadiene (HB) with SO3 at 10-110 degrees C in the presence of iodine or an iodine -contg. cpd. forming iodine ions under the reaction conditions, followed by sepg. D.A. from the reaction mass. D.A. is used in the prodn. of self-extinguishing polyester resins and glass-fibre plastics; as curing agent for epoxy resins; for synthesis of antiseptics used for protection of leathers, rubbers, paints and vulcanisates; in the prodn. of herbicides, fungicides and medical cpds. Yield is up to 96%.
