Synthetic resin compositions containing a homo- or co-polymer of a vinyl halide are stabilized against the deteriorative effects of heat and/or light by the inclusion of a compatible chloro-ethyl phosphite of the formula: <FORM:0857358/IV(a)/1> where x and y represent 0 or 1; x + y = 1 or 2; R and R1 represent aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic radicals containing no halogen atoms; and Ra, b, c, d represent hydrogen atoms or aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic radicals. Co-monomers exemplified are vinyl acetate and dibutyl maleate. The phosphite stabilizers may be used in conjunction with other stabilizers such as metal salts of organic acids, metallic phenolates and diorgano tin compounds e.g. salts of Cd, Zn, Pb, Sn, Ba, Sr and Ca such as cadmium benzoate or di (t-butylbenzoate), and barium and calcium laurates; Cd, Zn, Pb, Sn, Ba, Sr and Ca phenolates of octyl-, nonyl-, oleyl- and lauryl-phenol dibutyltin-S,S1-bis-iso-octyl mercaptoacetate and dibutyltin-S,S1-bis-lauryl mercaptide. The compositions may also contain plasticisers, e.g. dioctyl phthalate or dibutyl sebacate. Many examples of suitable phosphites are given and their preparation is described (see Group IV(b)).ALSO:Chloro-ethylphosphites of the formula: <FORM:0857358/IV(b)/1> Where x and y are 0 and 1; x + y=1 or 2; R and R1 represent aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic radicals containing no halogen atoms; and Ra, b, c, d represent H or aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic radicals are used as light stabilizers for vinyl halide resins (see Group IV(a)). The compounds may be prepared by reacting PCl3 with one or two parts of an alcohol or phenol and then reacting the chlorine-containing product with an epoxy compound. An extensive list of suitable epoxy compounds is given, many of which contain substitute groups such as esters, alkoxy, acyloxy, haloaryloxy, phenone and ureido. Preparative details are given for dinonylphenyl-2-chloropropropyl phosphite and didecyl-2-chloropropyl phosphite. Many other compounds are mentioned. |
