<p>Lactone monomers, opt. mixed with epoxy, monomers or pre-polymers are polymerised in presence of an aromatic diazonium slat of a complex halide which decomposes on irradiation to form a Lewis acid initiator. The lactones are of formula (in which R1 and R2 are H or alkyl, and n is 1-13) Pref. beta-propiolactone or -caprolactone is used. The catalyst is pref. a hexafluorophosphate, esp. the 2,5-diethoxy 4-(p-tolylthio)benzene diazonium salt. Polymersn. is initated by electromagnetic radiation e.g. visible or UV light, or by electron radiation. The polymers are useful in the graphics industry, due to improved adhesion to metal, excellent resistance to chemicals and solvents and ability to form high-resolution images. Other uses include decoration of paper glass and packaging materials and as light-hardening coatings.</p> |
