A machine tool includes a rotatable tool storage magazine 14 having tools mounted in cartridges 17 which are brought to a change position and lowered by a lead screw 38 to enable a tool to be removed or replaced by a toolchanging device 41. The device 41 comprises a triangular body casing 55 which can swivel to bring either of a pair of tool grips on slidable arms 78, 79 in alignment with a tool spindle 6 or a tool or empty socket in the cartridge 17. The casing 55 is also movable parallel to the spindle 6 to extract or engage a tool with the spindle 6 or cartridge 17. The two arms 78, 79 are moved simultaneously by a common drive constituted by a fluid pressure operated rack which drives a gear which meshes with two pinions connected with respective racks on the arms 78, 79 (Fig. 11, not shown). Both arms may be held stationary in a neutral mid-position of their stroke. The casing 55 which carries the arms 78, 79, is movable hydraulically parallel to the spindle 6 by means of a piston and cylinder, the cylinder being attached to a plate which is swivelled by a servomotor (Fig. 8, not shown). The swivelling is limited by adjustable end stops (Fig. 10, not shown). The machine tool comprises a bed 3 on which a work-table 1 is movable in " X " and " Y " axes, and a column 4 along which a spindle head 5 moves in the " Z " axis. The spindle head 5 carries the extendable tool spindle 6. |
