A novel method of mercerization in which the cellulosic textile material is saturated for a period of 60 seconds or less and preferably 10 seconds or less in a solution of an alkaline swelling agent, usually caustic soda at a concentration of 8.75% or more and at a temperature of 50 DEG C or more.
