Protective waist coat padded with PVC foam and bundles of filaments - to absorb blows without being cumbersome

A protective waistcoat e.g. for police comprises a padded body with a satin cretonne lining and a taffeta cover having stitched internal pockets to hold strips bundles of synthetic filaments to absorb blows from poles etc. The cover pref. weighs about 150g/m2 and is woven from expanded PVC (RTM 'Klegecell') anchored between lining and cover by lines of stitching. Strips of hooked fabric (RTM-'Velcro') are secured across the top of the shoulders to help hold the wearer's jacket in place over the waistcoat.
