<p>A paper web is dried by being passed over the upper open surface of a housing having vents in its sides connected to a suction device, and outlets in its bottom face through which liquid extracted from the paper web can be removed. In passing over the housing the paper web is supported on a screen mounted in the housing and comprising a series of parallel rolls extending between a pair of endless chains. The endless chains are supported between two rotatable shafts and the screen is advanced and the rolls rotated by contact with the advancing paper web which is maintained in contact with the rolls by the suction in the housing. Wear on the screen is reduced as are power requirements.</p> |
