The sugar cane harvester has adjustable topping and cutting blades. The field surface is probed without contact, the signals being evaluated and used to provide automatic blade adjustment. To effect this, a transmitter (2) on the harvesting machine sends out pulses directed at the cut stubble (5) or the ground (4). A receiver picks up the reflected pulses and a comparator evaluates the pulse echo time. The comparator results are used to effect the height adjustment through regulators and magnetic valves which operate the hydraulic height setting mechanisms (6).
