2-Chloro-4-alkylmercapto-6-nitrophenol derivs. pesticidal intermediates. Title cpds. are prepared by reacting a 4-alkylmercapto phenol:- (where R, R' and R" are 1-4C alkyl and R' and R" may also be H or halogen) with a dialkyl sulphate to form the sulphonium salt, with equimolar amounts of SO2Cl2 or Cl2 in glac. acetic acid followed by equimolar amounts of conc. HNO3 in either acetic or other fatty acid and finally treated with aqs. alkali chloride to dealkylate the sulphonium salt. The chlorination is pref. carried out at 0-40 degrees C. and the nitration at 30-90 degrees C. |
