The apparatus has a plurality of operating positions and is suitable for playing back magnetic tapes located in cassettes. A platform, bearing the magnetic head of the apparatus, has a rearwardly protruding lug (45), which interacts with a stop roller (47), fastened rotatably on a cassette-holding locking lever (25). The lug (45) and the roller (47) interact in such a way that the cassette holder (13) is released for a movement in the direction of the arrow (15) into a position in which the cassette can be loaded into the apparatus or removed from it only if the corresponding operating position is to be found. This structural design allows cost-effective series production, high operational reliability and easy operation of the apparatus. The operating button "cassette ejection" can be actuated in any desired operating position, that is in particular without first having to press the stop button and then subsequently press the eject button. <IMAGE>
