Field-effect fluidic crystal display cell - has ridges on facing surfaces of substrate plates to assist in alignment of elongated molecules

The field-effect fluidic crystal display cell has a nematic fluidic crystal layer (8) sandwiched between two substrate plates (1, 4) carrying opposing transparent electrodes (2, 5). The inner face of each substrate plate (1, 4) has a number of parallel ridges, the directions of the ridges for both substrate plates intersecting one another, so that the molecular alignment for the fluidic crystal layer (8) is twisted. The height of the helix defined by the characteristic twist is formulated in terms of the distance between the two substrate plates (1, 4) and the angle between the ridges of the two substrate plates (1, 4).
